dream bars

My sister posted this recipe on our family website the other day. I would love to make them, and eat them. But I can't find brown sugar in France. If YOU have brown sugar, you should make them and eat them in our honor. Thanks.

Title:
Dream Bars

Description:
A childhood favorite.

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine softened (not melted)

2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 Tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup coconut

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. Combine first three ingredients and press into the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan. Bake for 10 minutes.

Beat eggs until light and fluffy. Add brown sugar and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and stir into egg mixture. Stir in coconut. Spread over crust. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. (Poke holes all over the top after it bakes for 10 minutes. This makes the top fall down which makes the cookies chewy. Otherwise they are more cake like and have a different taste. You may want to do this twice during the bake time.) Cut while warm.

Number Of Servings:about 20 squares

Preparation Time:25-30 minutes

If you can find molasses you can substitute 1 cup white sugar mixed with 1-1/2 tablespoons of molasses for each cup of brown sugar.

don't worry juicy, you can definitely find brown sugar in france! it took me a while to figure out what it was, but it's made by the béghin say brand and is called "saveur vergeoise brune". It's found in the sugar aisle and comes in a 500G rectangular orange packet (I think it has crêpes on the front). Make sure you get the "brune" kind though, the other two won't work as well.

Roger bought some just this week! He hunted through the sugar aisle until he found some "saveur vergeoise brune" but he had to bring it home to open it to makes sure he had the right stuff - it doesn't say "sucre" anywhere on the label...
